WASHINGTON (BP) — President Obama addressed the nation’s largest abortion provider Friday (April 26), criticizing pro-life laws on the state level and saying that those who wish to restrict or ban abortion are trying to turn back “progress.”
Obama never mentioned the word “abortion” during his speech at the Planned Parenthood gala, preferring words such as “choice.” Planned Parenthood performed a record 333,964 abortions during 2010-11, the most recent year for which statistics are available.
He became the first sitting president to address Planned Parenthood.
“After decades of progress there’s still those who want to turn back the clock to policies more suited to the 1950s than the 21st century,” Obama said. “And they’re involved in an orchestrated and historic effort to roll back basic rights when it comes to women’s health. Forty-two states have introduced laws that would ban or severely limit access to a woman’s right to choose.”
He mentioned, by name, two states: North Dakota and Mississippi.
“In North Dakota, they just passed a law that outlaws your right to choose, starting as early as six weeks,” he told the crowd.
The law in question would prohibit abortion based on when the unborn child has a heartbeat, which could be as soon as six weeks into gestation. It is expected to be challenged in court.
In Mississippi, Obama said, “a ballot initiative was put forward that could not only have outlawed your right to choose but could have had all sorts of other far-reaching consequences.”
He was referring to a personhood initiative, defeated at the Mississippi ballot in 2011, that would have defined the term “person” to include “every human being from the moment of fertilization.” It lost, partially because pro-lifers in the state were divided over it and partially because opponents made the campaign about everything but abortion.
“When you read about these laws,” Obama said, “you want to check the calendar. You want to make sure you’re still living in 2013. Forty years after the Supreme Court affirmed a woman’s constitutional right to privacy, including the right to choose, we shouldn’t have to remind people that when it comes to a woman’s health, no politician should get to decide what’s best for you.”
He then added, “The only person who should get to make decisions about your health is you. That’s why we fought so hard to make healthcare reform a reality.”
Planned Parenthood, he said in affirming the organization’s mission, “is not going anywhere.”

Romney Care was/is the precursor to Obama care“The Stericycle deal—the abortion connection aside—is relevant because of questions regarding the timing of Romney’s departure from the private equity firm he founded. Responding to a recent Washington Post story reporting that Bain-acquired companies outsourced jobs, the Romney campaign insisted that Romney exited Bain in February 1999, a month or more before Bain took over two of the companies named in the Post‘s article. The SEC documents undercut that defense, indicating that Romney still played a role in Bain investments until at least the end of 1999.
Here’s what happened with Stericycle. In November 1999, Bain Capital and Madison Dearborn Partners, a Chicago-based private equity firm, filed with the SEC a Schedule 13D, which lists owners of publicly traded companies, noting that they had jointly purchased $75 million worth of shares in Stericycle, a fast-growing player in the medical-waste industry. (That April, Stericycle had announced plans to buy the medical-waste businesses of Browning Ferris Industries and Allied Waste Industries.) The SEC filing lists assorted Bain-related entities that were part of the deal, including Bain Capital (BCI), Bain Capital Partners VI (BCP VI), Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors (a Bermuda-based Bain affiliate), and Brookside Capital Investors (a Bain offshoot). And it notes that Romney was the “sole shareholder, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of BCI, BCP VI Inc., Brookside Inc. and Sankaty Ltd.”
The document also states that Romney “may be deemed to share voting and dispositive power with respect to” 2,116,588 shares of common stock in Stericycle “in his capacity as sole shareholder” of the Bain entities that invested in the company. That was about 11 percent of the outstanding shares of common stock. (The whole $75 million investment won Bain, Romney, and their partners 22.64 percent of the firm’s stock—the largest bloc among the firm’s owners.) The original copy of the filing was signed by Romney.
Another SEC document filed November 30, 1999, by Stericycle also names Romney as an individual who holds “voting and dispositive power” with respect to the stock owned by Bain. If Romney had fully retired from the private equity firm he founded, why would he be the only Bain executive named as the person in control of this large amount of Stericycle stock?
Stericycle was a lucrative investment for Romney and Bain. The company had entered the medical-waste business a decade earlier, when it took over a food irradiation plant in Arkansas and began zapping medical waste, rather than strawberries, with radiation. The company subsequently replaced irradiation with a technology that used low-frequency radio waves to sterilize medical waste—gowns, masks, gloves, and other medical equipment—before it was transported to an incinerator. By mid-1997, Stericycle was the second-largest medical-waste disposal business in the nation. Two years later, it was the largest. With 240,000 customers, its operations spanned the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Fortune ranked it No. 10 on its list of the 100 fastest growing companies in the nation.”

Romney used to be pro-choice and supported Roe v Wade. He has flip flopped and now says he is anti-abortion. The Stericycle investment raises eyebrows because some conservatives say Mitt’s money is not where his mouth is.

Hey, “Young Turk,” I care! I may not do a whole lot, but what I do is care. I care enough that I’m willing to be attacked by all the people on the right who are in love with Romney and Ryan simply because they are brainwashed by the rhetoric. Now, I must add this disclaimer, I’m not a Liberal, I’m not for Obama, I’m not a “lefty;” however, thanks to age and wisdom I am no longer considering myself a “Republican” either. Because I know the type of propaganda that spews from the pulpits of the Christian Right as well I will not call myself that either. I’m not in the “Tea Party” movement, and I don’t know a lick about what Libertarian’s believe so don’t call me that either. I’m willing to error on the side of truth and just bow out completely from this year’s most fake and bogus Presidential Campaign in history! And you thought 2008 was historical. No my friends, you have to go into this election fully aware of what you are doing and whom you are voting in. I do not agree with, “anybody but Obama.” I fell for that bowl of lie soup last time and almost fainted in the voter stand as I cast my vote because I knew how “Liberal” the Republican candidate was and didn’t think we’d be any safer with him! We seem to be doing everything we can to disrupt the Middle East and uproot Africa and stir the sleeping Bear of the North. God Help us. I do believe America is great and that we are a good nation, and I say that knowing much of the evils we do commit! However, we cannot continue to blindly and stupidly elect these Terrorists. Yes, I said it, producing illegal wars, killing innocent lives both domestically via abortion, and internationally in wars that are never voted on by our Congress but funded and blessed in secret via executive orders is wrong. The “Christian right” is the categorical group I have the most frustration with because –You– (we) are supposed to be held to a higher standard and are to reflect Christ. People say this country was built on Judeo-Christian beliefs, I have learned that not all the Founding “fathers” of this country were Christian. In fact many of the signers were deists and spiritualists who sought religious freedom not because they worshiped the One true God but because they wanted the freedom to worship no god at all. This truth about the founding fathers, and how throughout history we have been lied to about the motives and goals of this country, have put a negative taste in my mouth for ever lifting up any of these people for more than what they truly were, simply put–unbelievers. Whether or not this country had aulteristic motives really doesn’t matter now, what matters is where we are currently Oh Lord. It’s a demonic place. We “lord” over other countries, we go in illegally and start false wars to keep these other countries from ever being able to stand on their own. We spread fear and hate on our shores of people in other countries so that the masses feel compelled to go along with unjust wars that cost us taxpayers exorbitant money in the form of debt. By justifying false wars we willingly send our sons and daughters as tribute to fight to the death, to kill other children, men and women, in the false name of “Freedom.” We were once considered “Home of the Free, Home of the Brave.” Lord we are no more free today in our own country as the slaves that shed their blood and sweat building and toiling this land at its inception. Operation Rescue urges Calvary Chapel’s Pastor Smith to retract his advice and apologize to his listeners
Costa Mesa, CA – Pastor Chuck Smith, founder of Calvary Chapel, shocked listeners on Tuesday on his “Pastor’s Perspective” call-in radio program when he encouraged a tearful mother to abort conjoined twins.
The caller, who identified herself as “Nicki from Riverside”, indicated that her babies share a body but have two heads and that she was being pressured by her doctors to abort them due to their assessment that the babies would likely not survive the pregnancy or live beyond a day if carried to term. At no time did Nicki indicate how far advanced her pregnancy was or that her life was in danger from the pregnancy.
Choking back tears Nicki told Smith and his co-host Dan Stewart, “My heart does – never wants to have an abortion, but I don’t know what to do. I don’t know – I don’t know what direction to go to right now. I’m really praying hard and trying to believe that the Lord is going to do what He’s going to do with these two little ones, and I don’t know what to do.”
It is obvious to us, with our combined 45 years of experience working with abortion vulnerable women, that Nicki did not want an abortion but was seeking some spiritual affirmation and encouragement that would help her amidst the pressure from her secular doctors to take the lives of her innocent babies. She got none from Smith and Stewart, who told her that God would not condemn her if she chose abortion.
“It’s awfully hard to actually suggest abortion,” said Smith. “But, you know, I’m sure that, uh, in a case like this where the life expectancy is just, you know, is so bleak, and all, that I’m sure that the Lord would not condemn her if she went ahead and had an abortion at this early stage of the development of the fetus.”
