Iran struck a historic deal Sunday with the United States and five other world powers, agreeing to a temporary freeze of its nuclear program in the most significant agreement between Washington and Tehran in more than three decades of estrangement.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani endorsed the agreement, which commits Iran to curb its nuclear activities for six months in exchange for limited and gradual sanctions relief, including access to $4.2 billion from oil sales. The six-month period will give diplomats time to negotiate a more sweeping agreement.
It builds on the momentum of the public dialogue opened during September’s annual U.N. gathering, which included a 15-minute phone conversation between President Barack Obama and moderate-leaning Rouhani, who was elected in June.
The package includes freezing Iran’s ability to enrich uranium at a maximum 5 percent level, which is well below the threshold for weapons-grade material and is aimed at easing Western concerns that Tehran could one day seek nuclear arms.
Obama hailed the pact’s provisions, which include curbs on Iran’s enrichment and other projects that could be used to make nuclear arms, as key to preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear threat.
“Simply put, they cut off Iran’s most likely paths to a bomb,” he told reporters in Washington.
For Iran, keeping the enrichment program active was a critical goal. Iran’s leaders view the country’s ability to make nuclear fuel as a source of national pride and an essential part of its insistence at nuclear self-sufficiency.
Giving up too much on the enrichment program would have likely brought a storm of protest by Iranian hard-liners, who were already uneasy over the marathon nuclear talks and Rouhani’s outreach to Washington.
In a nationally broadcast speech, Rouhani said the accord recognizes Iran’s “nuclear rights” even if that precise language was kept from the final document because of Western resistance.
“No matter what interpretations are given, Iran’s right to enrichment has been recognized,” said Rouhani, who later posed with family members of nuclear scientists killed in slayings in recent years that Iran has blamed on Israel and allies.
Saying “trust is a two-way street,” Rouhani insisted that talks on a comprehensive agreement should start immediately.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who led his country’s delegation, called on both sides to see the agreement as an “opportunity to end an unnecessary crisis and open new horizons.”
But initial reaction in Israel was strongly negative. Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, called the deal, a “historic mistake.” End of quote. Full article linked to above.
Obama couldn’t construct a working Health Care website to go with his overhaul of American Health Care system, yet he wants us to believe he brokered a working lasting peace deal with Iran over it’s nuclear weapons enrichment program!?
Merely 11 years ago, then President George W. Bush, addressed the Nation and called Iran part of the “Axis of Evil,” now we are appeasing them.Make no mistake we are still allowing them to continue to enrich uranium and we are alleviating sanctions on them that have worked by staving off being bombed by them and perhaps prohibiting them from bombing Israel as well. Some would see the sanctions as a working solution to the never ending problem that is Iran. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, then president of Iran, called the United States “Satan” in his speech at the UN just a few years ago. There are countless videos and images of Iranian people calling for the “Death of America” and the “Death of Israel;” however, somehow we are to forget all that and believe that Iran wants peace with the US?
Eleven years is a long time, I’m sure adults can’t remember all the countries named in that speech that made up the “Axis of Evil.” Quite frankly the speech by G.W.B was propaganda anyway, merely a means for the neocons to have a perpetual state of War. Ahmadinejad said in June 2008, “Today, the time for the fall of the satanic power of the United States has come and the countdown to the annihilation of the emperor of power and wealth has started.” Source here Most have forgotten this speech as well.
Thanks to Obama, re-branding the USA’s image in the Middle East, we can rest assured that the Middle East and all of America’s enemies from the past only want good things for the US now and will honor all peace treaties they sign to. This “deal” is not a peace treaty, it’s not even an agreement for ‘mutual assured destruction.’ Exactly what was the deal Iran and the US agreed to?

Additionally in the deal, three-quarters of all centrifuges already installed at Fordow, and half of those at Natanz — another major facility — will be rendered inoperable within the coming months.
Iran will not be allowed to install new centrifuges, but will be required under the agreement to freeze all enrichment beyond 20 percent — a key step towards weaponization. The Iranian government will also be required to “dilute” all uranium already enriched above 5 percent into a form “not suitable for further enrichment,” the White House said on Saturday night.
But Iran may continue enriching uranium to 3.5 percent, and is required to dismantle any existing enrichment infrastructure.
The heavy-water plutonium reactor in Arak — which provides the Islamic Republic with another path to a nuclear warhead — will not be commissioned, fueled or further expanded.
In exchange for these concessions from Tehran, world powers will provide the Islamic Republic with sanctions relief valued up to $7-10 billion, including $4.2 billion in direct foreign exchange. The sanctions adjustments are “limited and reversible,” says the US government.
The official said that sanctions relief on Iran would amount to, “at most, $6-7 billion dollars,” in return for “very important concessions.”
That compares to over $100 billion lost in oil revenue alone over the last two years, the official noted, and an expected $30 billion more over the next six months, throughout the duration of the interim deal.
“The relief automatically expires at the end of six months,” the official noted, adding that the relief offered will be tightly controlled and “doled out in increments.”
The White House released a list of sanctions that would remain in place immediately after the announcement of the deal, which includes those against the Central Bank of Iran, Iran’s oil sector and restricted access to the US financial system.
The agreement will be in effect for six months, during which time the P5+1 powers will attempt to forge a conclusive, final-status agreement that will end the nuclear impasse.
“Nothing will be agreed to unless everything is agreed to,” Obama said.
The US government has said its goal is to “put time on the clock” in order to stave off military conflict between itself with its allies and the Iranian government.
US officials have characterized an alternative strategy popular on Capitol Hill — not to strike an interim deal with Iran, but rather to sanction its government even further — as equivalent to ordering a march to war.
“This deal appears to provide the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism with billions of dollars in exchange for cosmetic concessions that neither fully freeze nor significantly roll back its nuclear infrastructure,” said Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill), who favors new sanctions against Iran and lobbied against the deal. “Furthermore, the deal ignores Iran’s continued sponsorship of terrorism, its testing of long-range ballistic missiles and its abuse of human rights.” Kerry canceled a trip to Israel earlier in the week in order to clear his schedule for the weekend, expecting his presence would be required in Geneva.
The secretary will fly on from the Swiss city to London to meet with UK Foreign Secretary William Hague on Iran, and other matters, including Syria and the Middle East peace process.
The international community has refused to accept Iran’s production of fissile material since 2003, when George W. Bush called the Iranian government part of an “axis of evil” for its attempts to build weapons of mass destruction.” End of quote.
What’s the end game for Obama? He’s arming the enemies of the US (Al Qaeda in Libya and Syria), he’s allowing the Iranian Regime to continue enriching unabated (and we all know that they will enrich to the point of a Nuclear Bomb), he’s spying on ‘us’ (the American citizens) and on our allies (Germany, Latin America, etc.), he’s implemented a death blow to our economy via A.H.A (Affordable Health Care Act), he is weakening our military, what else does he need to do? He’s sanctified homosexual marriage, blessed planned parenthood, and created an atmosphere within American society that if you valued the country as a Republic or fancied yourself to be a capitalist, you are now the scum of the earth. What was his mission, and is he done yet? He has until January 2017. Three more years of Barrack Hussein Obama and his version of politicking.
